What is BEE Star Rating in AC? What is EER and ISEER Value?

Have you ever visited a mall or online store, looking for a large home appliance, and notice a BEE star rating sticker on it? Well, many consumers don’t even understand how vital this BEE star rating is, especially for heavy home appliances like AC, Refrigerators, Water Heater, etc. In this post, we will learn what BEE is, what is the purpose, and how to calculate it.

Understanding What is BEE?

The BEE stands for Bureau of Energy Efficiency. It is an agency under the Ministry of Power (Government of India) which is created in March 2002. The primary purpose of this agency is the conservation of energy by raising awareness about “the effective use of electricity” in the general public.

Meaning and Objective of BEE Star Rating

BEE star rating means how efficiently an appliance can use electric power. It is represented in the simplest form of a star rating given out of 5. The more the star rating of an AC, the less energy it will consume power, and you will save more electricity bill.

So it should be easy to understand that a 4-star inverter AC will save more power than a 3-star inverter AC. So always try to purchase a high BEE star rating AC like 4 stars or 5 stars. We also know that a 5-star inverter AC will cost more than a 3-star inverter AC, but the 5 star AC will save huge money on electricity every year. So effectively, a better eco-friendly investment would be a 5 star AC rather than a 3 star AC.

BEE has been rolling star rating for all the AC brands since 2006. Not only air conditioners, but the government has also made it mandatory for several large appliances brands to mention their BEE star rating for their product since Jan 2010. The main purpose is to spread awareness among consumers to understand energy consumption better.

The prime objective of this star rating is to reduce the energy consumption within the country. The customer must get all the necessary information about the energy efficiency of the particular product they are buying. In this way, the manufacturers are also competing for producing better energy efficient products.

How are the BEE Stars Calculated?

Before we understand how to calculate BEE star rating, first we must understand about the EER, ISEER value and difference between them.

1. EER Value

EER stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio and generally given to the fixed speed compressor (non-inverter) Air conditioners. EER of an AC is defined as

EER = Amount of heat removed in an hour ÷ Power consumed in the same hour

The heat removed by the AC will depend upon the temperature of the room. Therefore, it is calculated at a particular temperature and humidity. Generally, the outdoor temperature is set to 35°C and the indoor temperature will be set to 27°C with 50% of the humidity value for calculation purpose.

2. ISEER Value

After the introduction of variable speed air compressor conditioners (inverter AC), the old calculation method was not enough to provide an accurate result for different ACs. In fact, BEE has to introduce a new system of value calculation i.e. ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio).

As you can see, the calculation method of ISEER is pretty much the same as EER, but ISEER also considers the seasonal temperature changes and the variable power consumption by an inverter type AC.

3. Difference Between ISEER and EER

So we can say that all the non-inverter (fix speed) ACs will have EER value whereas the inverter ACs will have ISEER Value. Now, these values lead us to the BEE Star ratings. Take a look at the example below.

From this image, we can easily understand that if a 1.5 tonnage capacity non-inverter split AC has 3.3 EER value, that means it will have 4 Star rating in the year 2018 – 2019. Also, it will consume approximately 1576 of Watts of electricity per year (if you maintain your AC properly) and will save around 2400 per year.

Note: These results are calculated assuming 8 hours of AC operation per day for 5 months in a year, and you pay rs.4 per unit of electricity usage. 

We already have discussed above the direct relation of BEE star rating with ISEER value. So, higher EER or ISEER value means more BEE star rating, and it directly refers to more electricity savings with less electricity bill.

However, did you now that a Window and a Split AC can have the same star rating but different EER value? Well, it leads us to our next point.

Comparison of Different AC’s Star Ratings

It is not fair to compare a 4-star window AC with a 4-star split AC simply because of the difference between their EER values. As we already know that EER value means the efficiency of an electric appliance. After all, a 4-star window AC is less efficient than a 4-star split AC that is why the split AC will save more power.

As you can see in the image, these ISEER values will probably change every year. As the AC manufacturers keep on making the better efficient products, these ISEER value will change over time.

From this scenario, we have learned that in order to compare two different kinds of AC, we should check for their EER or ISEER value, not star rating.

Our advice is always to pay attention to the BEE star rating of whatever type of air conditioner you are buying. Every big appliance has a BEE star rating sticker along with the product details. Better the BEE star rating of the appliance means lower will be energy consumption and bigger savings.
